Roo Roo, I’m Drew!

I’m a retired racing Greyhound.  I raced on dog tracks in Iowa, Alabama, and Florida before beginning my retired career. Greyhounds are an ancient and noble breed. Greyhound-like dogs are depicted in temple drawings dating to 6000 B.C. They are the only breed of dog mentioned in the Bible (Proverbs 30:29-31; King James Version).

I know all that history stuff sounds important, but truthfully, it’s the activities I do now that are especially important.  I volunteer each month at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living, giving love to many residents who cannot leave their rooms.  I also volunteer as the Mascot for the Pope High School Football Team.  They are the Greyhounds, so who better to act as their mascot than me!  I’m actually joined by many other greyhounds and we all have a ball on the football field before the game with the pretty cheerleaders.

Speaking of balls, my favorite game is “Keep the football away from the 2-leggers!”  My parents buy me squeaky footballs to play with, so I use my racing speed to keep the ball away from them as long as I can – until I fall over exhausted from running!

I’ve been to a few training classes too.  Mom says I’m easy to train because I love to eat!  I’ve learned obedience and have a CGC – Canine Good Citizen designation.  I also have my Therapy Dog registration so I can read with you!

I have 2 sisters at home – Miss Handy and Miss Nikki, both retired greyhounds too.  They are both Brindle in color – white, black, and brown stripy all over (they look like tigers).  I also live with 3 cats – Rambeau, Scooter and Scrappy.  Scrappy is fun to chase; he lives outside and he’s always trying to scratch me!  I think he likes to get chased and climb up the trees to get away from me.  Really I love him, but I can’t show it that much.

My favorite hobby is sleeping.  Everyone thinks Greyhounds run all the time.  Truth be told, we really like to sleep, and can be lazy by nature.  We just love to chase things; that’s why we run – to catch what we’re chasing!

Please write me a message.  I’d love to hear how you’re doing on your reading and what activities you’ve been doing.  Have you read a good book or seen any good movies lately?

I like to write email too.  You can email me at Drew@READingPaws.org
